About Myself

I was born at Redruth in Cornwall and live local to the town. It's said Redruth was once the world capital of mining and under St Day was the richest square mile in the world.

As a child I grew up with a Cornish mining industry in decline, but with great mines such as East Pool and Agar, and also South Crofty still operating, at the time I was aware that large areas of Cornwall, including large parts of Camborne Pool and Redruth, were still industrial mining landscapes, with huge craters, arsenic dumps and poisoned ground with many open shafts and old mining buildings. Unfortunately what I did not know at the time, was the wealth of Cornish history that was to disappear with the ravages of time, nature new development and housing, and the many associated industries such as Holmans and Maxam, and many other small engineering firms that supplied Cornish mines that would no longer exist.

My work as an Artist Illustrator painting Cornish mining scenes into colour artwork, is to bring alive how these mines could have looked in there working day, and reconstructing the pictures from the original black and white photos often using rare scenes from private collections.

I also research historical background, and work closely with local historians, to get my images and dates as accurate as possible. I hold the subject very close to heart, as many of my family, and ancestors worked and mined locally, and many moved to distant lands throughout the many mining depressions, to escape poverty that Cornwall has suffered over the years.

I started Minescape Artwork in 1999 initially with graphite sketches of Cornwall's historic mining industrial landscapes, this led to a small product range of calendars postcards and prints, now over 15 years later my product range has grown to include a full range of Cornish colour cards, bookmarks, coasters, key rings, prints and fridge magnets, and illustrations of Cornish maritime and woodland scenes

All of the minescape products I produce are from my original sketches, or original painted artwork and are Gwrys yn Kernow. Made in Cornwall. I'm also available to undertake commissions, and historical art reconstructions to individual specification.

Please take your time to look at the gallery's showing my colour work and then the pages with my graphite sketch work
